Paul J. Smith, Sr.

March 9, 1937April 12, 2013

Paul Joseph Smith, Sr. passed away peacefully on April 12, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 9, 1937 in Orange, NJ the son of the late Lewis H. and Noreen H. Smith (nee Cunningham). Paul grew up in S. Orange and Summit, NJ and was formerly of Madison and Chatham, NJ. He proudly served his country in the US Navy. Paul leaves behind his wife, Edith (nee McKenna); children, Paul, Jr. (Judi) of Quarryville, PA, Linda Fahey (Stephen) of Virginia Beach, Maureen Stearn (Al) of Lake Hopatcong, NJ and Richard of El Cajon, CA; six grandchildren, Whitney Jackson (James), Ryan Fahey, Thomas Smith, Andrew Fahey, Jada Smith and Shane Smith; three brothers, Thomas of Oswego, NY, Donald of New Vernon, NJ and James of Smithfield, VA; and four sisters, Noreen DeGroot of Rangel Lake, ME, Barbara Romano of Tuckerton, NJ, Eileen Maiello of Summit, NJ and Nancy Faulkner of Forked River, NJ; and numerous nieces, nephews, greatnieces and greatnephews and loving friends. Paul was preceded in death by brothers, Lewis H. and John B. Smith and sister-in-law Patricia Smith. A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 18 from 5-8 pm in Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home in Virginia Beach. A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 19 at 11:30 am in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the local American Cancer Society or Heartland Hospice. You may offer condolences to the family at www.kellumfuneralhome.com.

Dear Aunt Edith, PJ, Linda, Maureen and Richard, Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers and we will miss Uncle Paul so, so much. He was definitely one of my favorite uncles who always made us laugh. While we have such heavy hearts due to his passing, (we were so lucky to get to see him not too long ago in West Orange) we can smile knowing he is reunited with my Dad and Uncle Lewie and they are buying him a drink with the "special Smith Navy coin"! Dear Maureen,
I have such fond memories of working with dad at AHP/Wyeth. Always laughing and telling jokes....he will be truly missed. Paul was one of the first people at our house to give condolences when J.T. died....I can still see him coming out of his truck, walking across the street to us, with tears in his eyes. What a great man!
