Richard Lee Lane, Sr.

Richard Lee Lane, Sr. passed away peacefully at home on April 29, 2023 surrounded by his family. He was born in Princess Anne County to the late Arthur and Elizabeth Lane. After graduating from Kempsville High School he joined the U.S. Army in 1951, serving his country for 5 years. After leaving the Army he continued to serve his community as a Norfolk Police Officer from 1958 to 1960. For the next 6 years, Dick worked with his father building houses until he was hired by the Norfolk Port and Industrial Authority in 1966 where he moved up very quickly to Maintenance Division Supervisor followed by Assistant Director Engineering and Maintenance with Virginia International Terminals until his retirement in 1997. In his retirement, Dick enjoyed building additions to his home, and other carpentry projects; he was also an avid gardener and loved the outdoors. Richard had a passionate love of animals, with several four legged and feathered friends frequently by his side over the years. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 67 years, Sylvia; son Richard Lee Lane, Jr and his wife Jan; 2 daughters, Terry Carpenter and her husband Jack, and Carol Finley; sister Annette Adkins; nephew, Michael Adkins; 8 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild. Special thanks to our caregiver Mary, as we think of her as a sister and part of the family. We would also like to thank Sentara Hospice for their comforting care and assistance. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on May 20th at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Chesapeake Beach Fire and Rescue of V.B. and/or the SPCA.
