Throughout his life, Richard was known for the steady diligence of a man who believed in showing up, doing what needed to be done, and doing it well. His work ethic was matched by a quiet strength that encouraged others to persevere, and by a measured perspective that reflected a lifetime of thoughtful judgment and earned understanding. In the ways he carried himself and the example he set, Richard left an enduring mark of purpose, integrity, and guidance.
He is a 1957 graduate of MERVO Technical High School in Baltimore Maryland and spent 35 plus years as a certified protection officer with Western Electric Baltimore Works (it later became Lucent Technologies). During that time he received the Vail Medal for outstanding acts of public service and courage after he dove into Colgate Creek, while working, and saved two men from drowning in 1982.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters Irene Burgess and Connie Rhodes.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Geraldine Haney Watson, his son, Richard G. (Velinda) Watson, Jr.; his daughter, Teresa A. (James) Bailoni and his daughter, Jennifer Watson; his 6 grandchildren, Lauryn (Sean); Melissa; Elena (Cody); Steven; Sophia: and Benjamin. He was also blessed with three great grandchildren, Rylie, Reagan and Kayden. He leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at Holly Hill Memorial Gardens, 10201 Bird River Rd, Baltimore, MD 21220, on June 4, 2026 at 2:00 pm.
