

Sandra Hathcock Brown, 75, went home to be with Jesus, her Lord and Savior, on October 29, 2025 at Viva Memory Care in Chesapeake. Sandra was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, September 8, 1950, the daughter of Barbara Hathcock Smith. She grew up in Charlotte and graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in 1968. She attended Central Piedmont Community College, earning her certificate as a Medical Office Assistant. In 1970 she married Jim Brown, also from Charlotte, and they were married for 55 years. They made Virginia Beach their home in 1986.
Sandra’s treasure was her family. She is survived by her husband, Jim, their three children; Chris Brown and wife Jennifer of Chesapeake; Jennifer Maggiore and husband Joe of Virginia Beach; Kimberly Nieter and husband Brent of Chesapeake; and nine precious grandchildren: Caleb, Noah, Samara and Eva Brown; Erin, Anna and Megan Maggiore; Blake and Allison Nieter.
Sandra held a variety of jobs over the years. She was a Medical Assistant for Dr. Charles Chrysler in Charlotte; an Administrative Assistant for a sales representative in Charlotte; A Medical Transcriber at Shands Teaching Hospital in Gainesville, Florida; and a Pre-school Teacher’s Assistant and Teacher at Atlantic Shores Christian School in Chesapeake where she served for thirteen years.
Sandra loved serving in the church, especially in ministries to children. She volunteered in the nursery, taught Sunday School, participated in Vacation Bible School, and coordinated the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Ministry at Church of the Messiah in Chesapeake for many years. As a member of Community Bible Study she taught the children’s classes. Along with Jim, she co-led a Missional Family Group, a ministry of Centerpoint Community Church and Crisis Pregnancy Center of Tidewater, ministering to expectant mothers and newborns. She was also active in women’s Bible studies, adult choir, women’s fellowships and worship arts ministry.
As a Pastor’s wife, Sandra ministered alongside Jim in hospital visitations, pastoral counseling and congregational care. She was multi-talented and had a heart of compassion. She touched many with the love and joy of Jesus.
The family will receive family and friends on Friday, November 21, 4:00-8:00pm at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N Witchduck Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. Interment will be on Saturday, November 22 at 10:00 am at Rosewood Memorial Park, 631 North Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, 23462. All are welcome to attend. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, November 22 at 2:00pm at Church of the Messiah, 816 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake, VA 23320. A reception in the Fellowship Hall will follow the service.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Viva Memory Care and the staff of Gentiva Hospice for the loving care they provided for Sandra. They also thank their many friends for their prayers, love and support expressed in so many ways.
