

Born and raised in Naugatuck CT, the son of the late William and Leona Patterson, he was appointed to the United States Naval Academy, graduated and was commissioned in 1951 and served 20 years. After earning an MBA from Old Dominion University he began his second career with ODU in the College of Business and Public Administration. He spent many years in the Dean’s Office of the School of Business as Assistant, Acting and Associate Dean. After 26 years, he retired as Associate Professor Emeritus of Information Systems and Decision Sciences. In retirement, he enjoyed competitive bridge and was a Life Master.
He is survived by his wife and partner of 56 years, Dorothy M. Patterson; daughter Kim Cunningham and husband Bill of TN; son Trip Patterson and wife Julie, two granddaughters, Autumn and Natalie of NJ; and daughter Tricia Rogerson and husband Brian, four grandsons, Jake, Troy, Mark, and Mike of Virginia Beach. His grandchildren brought much joy into his life. Bill is also survived by his sisters Audrey Fritschman and her husband Chris, and Linda Patterson and niece Leona Rickerson all of Virginia Beach. He will be greatly missed by his family.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 18th at 11:00am at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Rd., Virginia Beach, VA.
