William Lee Porter, Jr.

His parents, William L Porter Sr. and Audrey Burke Porter were working in agriculture in the region at the time of Bill’s birth and moved back to the US when Bill was 2 years old. Bill is the oldest of his siblings, James R. Porter and Edith Byrnes.

Bill married his high school sweetheart, Sandy in September of 1964. He worked for the 7-Up Company as an office manager and then at Virginia National Bank. He and Sandy moved into their first home in Avalon Terrace in Virginia Beach.

In 1972, Bill accepted a position with Princeton Bank and Trust. He and Sandy relocated to New Jersey where they raised their four children, Clint, Kim, Robin and Will. Bill later went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Rider College and advanced to become a trust officer. He continued to work through multiple mergers and buyouts and ultimately became Vice President of the Trust Department at PNC bank. Bill established strong relationships with his colleagues and clients due to his kind and personable nature. He especially loved to treat his clients to lunch at upscale Princeton restaurants like Lahier’s.

Bill also enjoyed treating his family to upscale home cooked meals like his famous eggs benedict that he made every Christmas morning. Bill served on the board of the Watershed Association in Mercer County and secured donors to support the association as well. He respected nature, enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and teaching his children to appreciate these things too. He was a cub master for cub scouts and excelled at coaching the boys how to become Pinewood Derby masters. Bill served many years as a Deacon at Pennington Presbyterian Church and because of his accounting background was entrusted with helping with the management of church finances.

Bill retired from the bank in 2007. He and Sandy enjoyed spending time at the Duck Neck Campground in Eastern Shore of Maryland where they made lifelong friendships with other campers and celebrated their 50th anniversary with their family and friends there. Bill and Sandy relocated to Chambersburg, PA and several years later found a home and a community of friends at Quincy Village in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. At Quincy Village he maintained two garden plots of vegetables, blueberries and strawberries. He was also an auxiliary member of the board at Quincy Village Colestock Center and enjoyed delivering baked goods and participating in the annual Halloween party for the children of Quincy Village employees.

Bill fought valiantly against his Parkinson’s disease and attended support groups for both Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s to support others who were struggling with these illnesses.

Bill succumbed to his long-term illnesses with his wife at his side.Bill was preceded in death by his parents William L Porter, Sr. and Audrey Porter.

He is survived by his wife Sandy, his brother James, his sister Edith, as well as his four children and 10 grandchildren.

A a celebration of life for William will be held Sunday, March 6, 2022 at 1:30 PM at Haygood United Methodist Church, 4713 Haygood Rd, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23455. A graveside service will be private will occur at Rosewood Memorial Park, 631 North Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23462.
