Born on May 18, 1943, in Mullens, West Virginia, he was the son of Oswald and Dorothy Smith. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean M. Smith, and his brother, Joseph Smith.
William is survived by his stepsons, David Bond and Steven Bond; Steven’s wife, Kyle Bond; and his three stepgranddaughters, Claire, Sarah, and Eleanor Bond. He also leaves behind numerous cousins, including his closest cousin, Rhonda Cook, who lovingly kept an eye on him in his later years. His “last cat,” Bodie—who he inherited from his brother Joe—managed to outlive them both and is now happily residing with Rhonda.
Known as “Bill” to most and “Tom” to his mother and immediate family, he was well-loved by anyone who knew him, no matter which name he answered to.
Bill proudly served a tour in the United States Marine Corps after graduating high school in 1961. Following his service, he spent the remainder of his career working for the Norfolk and Southern Railroad until retirement. In those years after retiring, he enjoyed watching baseball, going on cruises, and visiting Chincoteague with Jean. The two were always delighted to attend a good concert together.
A lifelong Yankees fan and cat lover, Bill was never without a great—or humorous—story to share, whether about his spirited teenage years in Kempsville, his time in the Marines, or his experiences on the railroad. By his own admission, he lived a colorful life before settling down with Jean, who brought him great joy. Bill was a lifelong member of the Aragona Church of Christ and a fixture in the congregation. His faith and presence will be deeply missed.
Bill’s remains will be interred at Rosewood Memorial Park beside his loving wife, Jean, where they will rest together. A Graveside Service will be held at 2pm on Thursday, January 15th at Rosewood Memorial Park, 631 N. Witchduck Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any cat rescue organization in his honor.
