Duke was born February 8, 1950, in Norfolk, Virginia. His greatest achievement was that of his six children; Kristen Leverentz, William C. “Will” Whiteside, Catherine M. Hewitt, Ani T. Hunter, Elizabeth J. Whiteside, Rebecca J. Tyner, and his numerous grandchildren. Duke is preceded in death by his father, William O. “Bill” Whiteside, his mother, Edna E. “Buzzy” Whiteside, and his sister, B. Marie Fletcher.
As a jack of all trades, Duke started his career working construction while volunteering as a paramedic and firefighter. Wanting to make a difference in the world, he joined the ranks of Norfolk Police Department from 1971 – 1975. It was his deep devotion to his faith that ultimately led his life in a different direction. He formed a deep and life long lasting relationship with God and became ordained, spreading the Word of God to any who would listen. Duke was also an extremely creative person. Using his experience working in construction, he went into estimating and, ultimately, support to help others learn estimating as well.
His passion and thirst for knowledge was a trait he instilled in his children as well. To him, family, not just by blood, was the most important thing in the world. He always had a truly caring heart and had an open-door policy to any that needed shelter from the storm that is life.
