

William O. Whiteside, 80 passed away peacefully on May 28, 2010. He came into the world on May 5, 1930 in Abilene, Texas, the only child of Eliza Jones and J.C. Whiteside. His greatest loves were his wife, his family, and his country. Bill started his military career enlisting in Wichita Falls, TX on January 19, 1948. He retired on April 30, 1974 as a Navy Chief. His military career and achievements included; Special Duties, Diver 2nd Class, Atomic War Veteran, Veteran of US Occupation Forces in Japan, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam, Cuban Blockade, Salvage Diver, Pacific & Atlantic Fleets. His medals include the Korean Service Medal with Communist China Aggression Star (K4, K5, K6, K7), United Nations Service Medal, (4) National Defense Service Medals (6) Good conduct Medals and the Korean PUC with one Oak Leaf Cluster. Bill was preceded in death by his daughter, Marie Fletcher.
Bill Whiteside is survived by his loving wife of over fifty years, Edna (“Buzzy”) Whiteside; four children, James Whiteside, Daymon (Whiteside) Kohler, Sandra Franklin, and William B. Whiteside; fifteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2010 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM in Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Road in Virginia Beach. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, June 4, 2010 at 12:00 PM in the funeral home with burial and full military honors to follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. At Bill’s request feel free not to wear black. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to the Wichita Falls Boys & Girls Club, 1318 6th Street, Wichita Falls, TX, 76301-2319 in Bills name.
