Yvonne Satira Sutton, born February 11, 1946, to Harold and Margrete Nelson, went home to be with the Lord on April 24, 2026, surrounded by love from her two daughters, grandkids, and son-in-law. Leaving behind a legacy of strength, devotion, and unwavering love to anyone who knows her.
Yvonne was born in Pueblo Nuevo, Panama, where she was raised and educated in Catholic schools, including Santa Familia, a school she often spoke of and held close to her heart. Spanish was her first language, and her cultural roots remained an important part of who she was throughout her life. In the 1970s, Yvonne migrated to the United States in search of greater opportunities and a new beginning. There, she met what many would call her true love, George. Although they later divorced, their love always remained. Yvonne dedicated over 30 years of her life to working as a nurse’s aide, caring for others with compassion, strength, and dedication.
After retiring, she spent her time at home nurturing, guiding, and advising her family and friends—often doing so in her own firm and loving way; those closest to her knew it simply as “telling people what to do.” If you knew her, you knew she spoke her mind; she would tell you off one minute and embrace you the next. Yvonne began her battle with cancer in 2019 at the age of 73 years old and fought not only with cancer but also trying to ensure she stayed around to hold the flag, as she would say, for her family. In 2025, cancer showed up again, and her fight began to get weaker. She began waving her flag and surrendering to God through conversations with her family and friends. She was brought to Virginia by her youngest daughter, Georgiana, and her husband, Richard, to be closer, where she rested peacefully until she was called home.
Yvonne was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her two daughters, Lucille and Georgiana, who are married to Marcial Gough and Richard Smith. She leaves behind six grandchildren: Larry, Frederick, Aribela, Royal, Chenille, Savanique, Phiana, and Joshua; as well as nine great-grandchildren. She also leaves her two sisters, Paulina and Violet, and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family who loved her dearly. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, Margrete and Harold Nelson; her sister, Catalina Edwards; her brother, Harold Nelson; and her niece, Esperanza Innis.
Yvonne was a fighter who never lost a battle. She stood strong not only for herself but for anyone she loved or held close. She will always be remembered for her unconditional love, her loyalty, her strength, and the way she fiercely protected and cared for those around her. Her legacy will live on through her family, her strength, and the many lives she touched. Forever loved and never forgotten.
A message from her youngest daughter, Georgiana: “Mama, I never thought the day would come that I would be without you. You taught me so much, but never how to live without you. You installed so much in Lucille and me, and we will forever be grateful. Please watch over our families and us. You are now our personal Angel. We love you, Mama.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 9, 10:00am at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach.
Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park.
