Zella Anne "Annie" Falch, formerly Bowman, born January 24, 1943, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, June 6, 2026.
Born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia, Annie grew up in a loving Methodist family that helped shape the values of faith, compassion, hard work, and kindness that she carried throughout her life.
She married Friedrich Falch, an immigrant from Austria, beginning a loving partnership that would span 59 years. Fully embracing her husband's heritage, Annie developed a deep appreciation for Austrian culture, decorating their home with Austrian treasures and traditions and learning to speak German. Together, they built a life centered on family, hard work, and adventure, establishing their lifelong home on a farm in Chesapeake, Virginia, where they created countless memories and welcomed family, friends, and animals over the decades.
Annie was preceded in death by her beloved parents Vernon and Inez Bowman and her dear sister, Lois See and brother in law John See, whom she loved all dearly. She is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, Friedrich Falch; her son, Friedrich Vernon Falch; her stepson Barry Falch and his wife Martha Falch; her granddaughter, Krista Kate Cooper, formerly Falch and Krista's husband Harrison and her five cherished great-grandchildren, Jacob, Nolan, Grayson, Maya, and Maeve. She is also survived by her nephews, Vernon, Johnny, and Kenny; her niece, Mandy; and Brenda, her dear friend. Annie also leaves behind many other beloved extended family members, and dear friends and students whose lives were touched by her kindness, warmth, and spirited nature.
Throughout her life, Annie shared a special bond with her son, whose steadfast devotion, love, and support were evident to all who knew them. His gentle care, unwavering consistency, and dedication brought her great comfort and happiness, especially in her later years.
Annie lived a vibrant, adventurous, and deeply meaningful life. A lifelong horsewoman, she trained over 50 horses and countless horseback riding students throughout the years. An accomplished rider herself, she competed in numerous prestigious horse shows and earned multiple ribbons over the course of her equestrian career. Many of her students went on to become accomplished riders, with some pursuing professional equestrian careers. She also took special joy in sharing her love of horses with her granddaughter, Krista, introducing her to horseback riding at a young age and helping foster a passion for horseback riding. Her passion for horses was matched only by her dedication to sharing her knowledge and love of riding with others.
An avid traveler, Annie explored many parts of the world and especially cherished her time on the slopes. She enjoyed skiing throughout the Colorado Rockies, including many memorable trips to Vail, as well as adventures in the Appalachian Mountains with her son and granddaughter at Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania. She also treasured her travels to Austria with her husband, where she embraced the culture and heritage that became such an important part of her life. Annie proudly served for many years as a ski trip captain with Ski World of Virginia Beach, helping others create unforgettable memories through travel and adventure.
Annie had a generous heart and a special compassion for animals. Throughout her life, she opened her home to countless dogs, cats, and horses in need, providing them with love, care, and a second chance. She found joy in dancing, shopping, horseback riding, skiing, traveling, and spending time with those she loved.
She was also a lover of the arts and entertainment, enjoying everything from trips to the movies and live theater performances to attending ballet productions and playing piano. Whether she was teaching a student to ride, caring for an animal in need, planning her next adventure, or spending time with family and friends, she approached life with energy, determination, and enthusiasm. Known for her spirited nature, Annie was a fiercely independent woman who met life on her own terms. Her determination, strength, and feisty personality were among the qualities that made her so memorable to those who knew and loved her. She was never afraid of hard work, a new challenge, or speaking her mind, and she carried that strength with grace throughout her life.
Annie will be remembered for her warmth, independence, kindness, love of animals, and zest for life. Her legacy lives on in the family she adored, the students she mentored, the animals she rescued, and the many friends whose lives were enriched by knowing her.
Though she will be deeply missed, her adventurous spirit, generous heart, and countless memories will remain with those who loved her. Her life was a testament to the joy that comes from embracing new experiences, caring deeply for others, and sharing one's passions with family and friends. May she eternally rest in peace.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Chesapeake Health and Rehabilitation Nursing Center for their care.
A memorial service will be held at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home on Saturday, June 13th at 2:00pm.
