Mary was born on July 12, 1954, at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, to Kathleen, a schoolteacher, and Thomas Kilmartin, while “Tom” was stationed at Randolph Air Force Base as an Air Force bombardier.
Mary was a precocious child who knew her own mind. Family lore has it that, early on, she pointed to herself and declared, “Me, Me.” From that moment, she was known to her family as MiMi — a name, and a personality, entirely her own.
She graduated from Cornwall Central High School in June 1972. Mary married the love of her life, Richard Hutchins, twice — first on May 5, 1973, and again on February 5, 1974. Together they had two beautiful children, Thomas Richard Winfield Hutchins and Erin Rose Hutchins. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Richard, and her mother, Kathleen, in 1982; her father, Thomas, in 1991; her sister, Dr. Ellen Kilmartin, in 2015; and her son, Thomas, in 2016.
Mary spent much of her career in service to others as a bus driver throughout the Newburgh and Beacon areas, transporting children and adults alike. She truly enjoyed her work, especially the people she met and the connections she made along the way.
Over the years, Mary became much more than MiMi. To those fortunate enough to be welcomed into her life, she became Mama Mary. Family, to Mary, was never limited to blood. She had a remarkable way of gathering people in, loving them as her own, and giving them a place in her wonderfully extended family.
She leaves behind her beloved daughter, Erin King, and son-in-law, Michael King, who, after Mary’s retirement, became perhaps closer than most in-laws would admit. She also leaves her Anam Cara, Sara Pastorello, and her soul grandchildren, Anthony Pastorello and Eve Pastorello; Tina Reedy, whom Mary loved and treated as a daughter from afar, along with Tina’s husband, Ramon Reedy, and children, Lizzie, Alyssa, and Aiden.
Mary’s true partner in crime was Kathleen Goguen — a title earned over years of friendship, laughter, and undoubtedly a few stories best left with them. Mary also leaves her devoted friend, Laura Marta, whose steadfast friendship and loyalty held a special place in Mary’s life.
Mary is also remembered with love by her nieces and nephews, Theresa, Anne-Marye, Richard, and William (Nate), as well as her extended family and the many adopted children who became part of her life — many of whom were given their own special MiMi names.
A Celebration of Life for Mama Mary will be held on Saturday, October 17, at 10:00 a.m. at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 543 Union Avenue, New Windsor, New York. A repast will follow on site at 12:00 p.m. In honor of one of Mary’s greatest loves, guests are encouraged to wear something Disney. Those who wish are also encouraged to share a favorite story or memory of Mama Mary as we celebrate a life that touched so many.
