Barbara Jayne Nickels

Barbara Nickels, aged 90, went to be with her Lord March 6, 2013. She is survived by her husband of 68 years Edward Nickels; her children: Dennis (Randi) Nickels, Phillip (Rose) Nickels, Patricia (Richard) Wagstaff, Kathleen (Alexander) VanderWeert, and Edward (Jane) Nickels; grandchildren: Phillip Nickels, Jr., Katie Howard, Keith Nickels, Sarah Nickels, Kimberly Lewis, Steven Wagstaff, Aaron Nickels, Kimberly VanderWeert, and Ann Fermin; and great-grandchildren: Emma Howard, Julia Howard, and Gabriel Fermin; and a special niece JoAnn Lynch Petrie. Barb graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1940 and Mercy Nursing College. She served as a 2nd Lieutenant nurse in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. On November 9, 1944 she married Edward Nickels. Barb was a member of the St. Therese Catholic Church and was a member of the St.Anne's Circle. She volunteered organizing the Red Cross blood drives in Wayland and served on the Women's Library Guild. Barb enjoyed hosting her many friends and family members, especially for pool parties. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 A.M. Monday, March 11, at St. Therese Catholic Church with Father Christian Johnston officiating, followed by military honors. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Family will greet friends and relatives 2-5 P.M. Sunday at Kubiak-Cook Family Services, Wayland- 312 N. Main Street, Wayland, MI 49348, with a Rosary at 2 PM.
