Deborah “Debbie” Mae VanOflen, age 66, passed away Saturday, August 21, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents Jim and Jennie VanOflen and special aunt, Vivian Yerrick, who were her caretakers for most of her life until their deaths.

Debbie, our dear sister, aunt, great-aunt, and friend, passed away very unexpectedly Saturday, August 21. To know her was to love her, and while she couldn’t communicate in the traditional way because of her cerebral palsy, her smile, her expressions, and her eyes said it all. Everyone who met her grew to love her for her beautiful smile, her determination, and her passion for helping where she could. She loved her family and animals, especially her dogs.

She resided with and is survived by her sisters Jamie Cardosa and Becky (Mark) Meyer; nephews Nathan (Nicole) Cardosa, Michael (Courtny) Cardosa, Dan (Rachel) Cardosa, Brett (Amber Beimers) Meyer; great-nephew Landen Cardosa; great-nieces Raegan Cardosa, Remi Cardosa, Mila Cardosa, Jennifer “JJ” Cardosa, baby Cardosa; her best friend whom she loved for over 50 years, Bud Richards; special friends Deb Regal, Alice Donahue, Joan McLain; and special nurses Jackie, Carol, Jeanette, Jeannine, Sue. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to Dr. Terrance Barnes and Dr. Francis Hart for their wonderful care and compassion.

Visitation with Deb’s family and friends will be held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, August 29, 2021 at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Home, 312 N. Main St., Wayland. A celebration of life will be held 1 p.m. Monday, August 30, 2021 with one hour of visitation prior to the service, at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Home.

In honor of Debbie and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary, 8935 Thompson Rd., Lake Odessa, MI 48849. The family welcomes memories and messages in their guest book online at

I well remember Debbie and all of her family from my two years teaching at Eastern Orthopedic. Her determination, smile, and bright wit were just some of her great qualities. My condolences. Prayers being sent for all.

I was at my fathers memorial on Sunday and didn't read the obits until Monday or I would have Debbies memorial. Debbie was a fun loving, sweet person. The trip to Washington D.C. was a lifetime experience and Debbie made it even more enjoyable. I know what a loss this has to be to Debbies family and loved ones. My prayers are with you.

It is "Her smile, expressions, and her eyes", that showed the spirit that is Deb. It is what we will always love, and always remember, always.

I have fond memories of Deb and her days at Lincoln School. She was always upbeat and had such a nice smile. I used to refer it as her forever smile. We have COVID in our house so will be unable to make it to visitation. We were blessed to have her as part of our lives.

Debbie was a special person. Thinking of you Jamie and Becky, the loss of a sister is hard; as well as the rest of the family. Prayers.

The worlds a little more empty now that she's not in it. But she will live on as long as we all remember her..... She was my best friend and more, since we meant in our teens at high school. And turned out we only live three blocks apart. And didn't know it.... But that's another story, :)

Rest In Peace, dear friend . You were a delightful three year old when we first met and continued to grow into a beautiful woman. I am sad but I am happy that we were friends for so many years. I count my blessings especially those that are a part of your wonderful and caring family ... you were so loved and cared for by all especially your Dad, Mom, Willie , Leonore, Becky and Jamie!

“Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithfully departed especially those from the VanOflen and Yerrick families , through the mercy of God, Rest In Peace. Amen”

So many fond memories of Deb during our time together at Eastern Orthopedic. Deb had an infectious smile and laugh. She did the best she could with what she had and always tried hard. Condolences to Debs family and Bud.
