James proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps serving during the Vietnam War and as a drill instructor. James enjoyed spending time hunting, playing and working on computers, watching TV, and tinkering around the house. He enjoyed spending time with his family and will be deeply missed.
James leaves behind his wife, Karen Austin; children Stephanie Austin, James (Kelly) Austin Jr., Trent (Dawn) Austin, Trevor (Deb) Austin; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Austin Jr.; extended family and friends.
James is preceded in death by his parents Robert Sr. and Leona Austin; siblings Violet, Leona, Charlene, Jane, Raymond and Roger.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, September 17, 2026 at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Services - Wayland Chapel, 312 N. Main St., Wayland, MI 49348. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, September 18, 2026 at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Services – Wayland Chapel, with visitation one hour prior.
