Throughout her life, she resided in the countryside, beginning at her family's farm in Martin and later creating her own beloved homestead where she raised her children. Her farm and her “barn” were her most treasured possessions, which she frequently opened for others to enjoy, hosting weddings, reunions, and life celebrations. Joyce possessed many talents, including gardening, sewing, and photography. Her faith and commitment to her church fostered lifelong friendships and precious memories, especially from her time at the Crystal Lake church camp which resulted in many “family camps” thereafter. A natural storyteller, she found immense joy in sharing her love for her family, church community, and historical anecdotes. She took great pride in researching and documenting her family lineage, leaving no detail overlooked.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents Homer and Doris McAllister; brother, Jerry McAllister; and her beloved husband, Herman VandenBerg. She is survived by her siblings John McAllister, Carol (Lary) York; children Andrew (Susan) VandenBerg, Alaine (Mark) Chrusciel, and Austin VandenBerg (Debbie Kennedy). Additionally, she leaves behind five granddaughters Monica (Shawn) Eldred, Amanda (Ron) Hoeksma, Lyndsey (Andy) Qualiato, Ashley (Luke) Wolters, and Chelsea (Ralph) Balkema, along with 14 great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her life.
Our family warmly invites all those whose lives were touched by Joyce to join us on August 29, 2026, for services honoring her memory at United Church of Wayland, 411 E.
