Marvin was born on September 13, 1937, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Alfred and Elizabeth Foote. He attended Middleville High School, where he distinguished himself as a record-setting athlete in three sports.
Following graduation, Marvin began a successful 35-year career in the aerospace industry as an engineer. In 1959, he married Constance Swafford, and together they raised three children. After Constance’s unexpected passing, Marvin found love again and married Ruth Vanderlaan in 1985.
Following his retirement, Marvin successfully managed a large portfolio of income properties. He took great pride in teaching his sons, Mark and Keith, how to build, repair, and work with their hands. He especially enjoyed spending time on his farm, tinkering with old tractors, and restoring classic cars.
A lifelong learner, Marvin continually sought opportunities to expand his knowledge, frequently attending classes to strengthen his skills in electronics, property management, and public speaking. He instilled in his children the importance of education, hard work, and perseverance. Known for his exceptional work ethic, Marvin led by example throughout his life.
Despite his many accomplishments and tireless dedication to work, Marvin treasured time spent with family. Sundays at the family cottage were among his happiest moments. Standing 6'5" tall, Marvin was often described as a gentle giant—kind, generous, and deeply caring toward others.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings: Lawrence, Clarence, Barbara, Charmaine, Marilyn, Ruby, and Robert. He is survived by his brother, Don; his loving wife, Ruth; children Julie (Brett) Shrontz, Mark Foote, and Keith (Allison) Foote; and beloved grandchildren Kannon and Annika.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Legacies Assisted Living in Caledonia and Optimal Care Hospice for the compassionate care, kindness, and support they provided during Marvin’s final months.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, June 28, 2026 at Cook-Kubiak Funeral Home in Wayland, Michigan. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.kkubiakcookwayland.com in their online guestbook.
