Melvin"Mike" Ekkel

Melvin "Mike" Ekkel, age 73 of Wayland, went to be with his Lord June 1, 2014. He was preceded in death by his wife Joan in 1988; his parents: John and Dena Ekkel; his sisters: Edith Tozer and Diane Ekkel and brothers: James and Donald Ekkel. He will be lovingly remembered by his children: Jeff (Nancy) Ekkel, Debra (Eugene) James, and Dawn Stein; grandchildren: Jeremy Ekkel, Joshua Ekkel, Nicole James, Kyle James, Elizabeth Stein, and Olivia Stein; brothers and sisters: Ruth (Darrel) Taylor, Frances (Gary) Robb, and Irv (Jill) Ekkel; many nieces and nephews. Mike was a former member of the Wayland School Board and attended the Gun Lake Community Church. He had a strong work ethic and retired as a tool and die supervisor from General Motors. Mike spent many summers at Sandy Pines Resort and enjoyed woodworking and flea marketing. He loved to bake and looked forward to daily coffee hour at Big Boy. A memorial service to celebrate Mike's life will be held Thursday, June 5, 2014 at 11 AM at the Gun Lake Community Church with Pastor Dan Beyer officiating. Friends may visit with Mike's family from 10 AM to 11 AM, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Faith Hospice, Gun Lake Community Church or the National Kidney Foundation.
