Born in Grand Rapid, Michigan July 1, 1936 to George and Freda Corner during one of the hottest summers on record, Nona was an only child until the age of 12 when her cousin, Carroll Mayville-Blaszak, came to live with her and her parents. Both Nona and Carroll became true sisters and best friends throughout the rest of their lives.
At age 14, Boyce and Nona met at her family's church and spent the rest of their lives together. In 1954, Boyce went into the Army, but he and Nona remained inseparable. During that time, Nona graduated from South High and obtained her cosmetology license. In 1956, Boyce and Nona were married and began their life together. Over the course of the next 69 years, Boyce and Nona built an amazing life together.
Nona wore many different hats over the course of her almost 89 years. She was a hairdresser, then became a wig distributor and fashioner. Nona was one of the most creative people we all had the privilege to know and was a true designer at heart. Throughout her life, Nona designed storefronts in stores such as Woolworths, Montgomery Ward, and Sears. Nona also worked as a salesperson at Tifflins, the first plus size women’s clothing stores in Grand Rapids. After many years of working for others, Nona went to work for herself and opened The Waters Edge Floral and Gifts and Designs at Gun Lake, Michigan. Nona’s business flourished and provided her with much happiness as there wasn’t a person who didn’t love her.
Nona was a cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved her family more than anything. Nona had two literally larger than life boys, Todd and Tim, who were the lights of her life who continued to support her and her shenanigans until the end.
Nona is survived by her husband of nearly 69 years, Boyce Miller; sons Todd (April) Miller, Timothy (Deb) Miller; grandchildren Andrew Miller and Stephanie Kohlert, Jenna Miller and Justin Dominique, Christopher (Elyse) Miller, Lacey Miller, Amber Debolt, Quinn (Mel) Debolt; great-grandchildren Jordan, Christopher, Hadlee, Harper, Beckham, Bryson, Delaney, and Beau; as well as many special friends whom she loved and cherished.
Nona came into this world during one of the hottest summers on record and in her true fashion left this world on the tails of twisters that swept through our area. Nona was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all.
A celebration of life gathering will be held at a later date. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.kubiakcookwayland.com in their guestbook online.
