

She was born July 13, 1926, in Hunker, a daughter of the late Charles H. and Birdie Cowan Michaelson.
Alice was a graduate of German Township High School in 1943, and a graduate of Waynesburg College in 1947. She earned her master’s degree in English from West Virginia University in 1963.
She was an assistant teacher of college English at Waynesburg College Uniontown Center from 1947 to 1949. She then taught at East Bethlehem Schools from 1949 to 1955; then from 1955 until her retirement in 2001 she taught at the Jefferson-Morgan School District. She directed plays, sponsored classes, and was involved in extracurricular activities.
During her career she taught courses in English, History, Latin, and German. She taught Children’s Literature at Westmoreland Community College in Waynesburg. Alice also taught a Bible study class at SCI Greene for several years.
Alice had traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Egypt, China, Inda, Japan, and Russia.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Waynesburg. She served as a missionary for the United Methodist Church in Nidieve, Africa. She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, serving four times as Worthy Matron of Emerald Chapter No. 135, and served as aa Grand Chapter committee member for many years. She had served as President of the Children’s Literary Guild and the Waynesburg Library Club. She volunteered as a reading partner at the Waynesburg Elementary School. She had served as president of the Greene County Horseman’s Association and was secretary of the Interstate Horseman’s Association for 28 years. She was a volunteer with the Hospital Auxiliary at Southwest Regional Medical Center.
On November 23, 1949, she married Joseph R. Souders, who died July 28, 1993.
Surviving is a daughter, Cheryl Lee (Mark) Long of Farner, TN; a granddaughter, Theresa Ann Hennen of Wadestown, WV; two great-grandchildren, Raylee and Tanner Hennen; a close neighbor and adopted daughter, Traci Wade of Waynesburg, and a good friend, Sandra Whetzel.
Deceased is a sister, Gloria and a brother, Gene.
