Fernie, as her loved ones knew her, was born in the province of Mauban, Quezon in the Philippines on June 23, 1942. She graduated high school from Central Quezon Academy and continued on to graduate from University of the East in Manila, Philippines with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. On May 17, 1975, she married her true love, Renato "Pogi" Almirañez. Fernie and Rene started a family, and emigrated to Houston, Texas in 1981.
Fernie began working in the Dietary Department of the Woman’s Hospital. Then, in 1982, began working in the MIS department at Grocer’s Supply Company. She dedicated 22 years there before retiring at 62.
As a devout Catholic, Fernie would pray the rosary and the Divine Mercy daily. In her later years, she would watch EWTN, a Catholic channel. She was an active member of Kislap ng Sta. Elena, a ministry of Filipino parishioners at St. Helen’s. She even completed two pilgrimages to the Holy Land.
Fernie was loved by all she encountered. She never met a stranger. She was a wonderful confidante; generous friend; “mang-hihilot” or one with healing abilities; talented cook, and avid volunteer. One of her favorite expressions is- “Ay, katakot-takot kayo!” meaning “good grief", or "you’re too much”.
After beating breast cancer, she loved traveling back to her homeland of the Philippines to visit countless family members and friends. She even successfully ascended the steps of the Chocolate Hills in Bohol, Philippines.
Fernie was happiest playing mahjong, the slot machines, and the scratch-off lottery tickets. She enjoyed watching her beloved Astros, and later in life, her K-dramas and game shows. She loved hearing the latest antics of her four grandchildren, fishing and crabbing with Pogi, and spending time with countless friends and family.
Fernie is preceded in death by her mother, Maria Caliwanagan, her Kuya Casiong, her Tia Mena, and her Tia Rohing. She will be deeply missed by her husband of 46 years, Renato, her daughters Arlene, Alina, and Aizel, son-in-laws, Jeff and Hieu, and grandchildren Riley, Benjamin, Ashlan, and Bea; as well as a myriad of nieces, nephews, family members, and friends whose life she touched.
