September, 2023 at the age of 64 in Orlando, Florida surrounded by her loved ones.
Amy was born on February 15th, 1959 to Shirley and Iss Mendelowitz in a cozy apartment on
the Lower East side of Manhattan, with views of the towering Williamsburg Bridge from her
window. The cold winters were kept at bay with bags of bialys from her favorite shop on the
corner of Grand and Essex, and the summers filled with joy in the parks off of Cherry Street with
her siblings.
She attended the University of Arkansas, where she obtained a degree in social work and met
the love of her life - Edward Calcote. While attending school, Amy channeled her conviction and
endless compassion to address hardships and ADA non-compliance around campus and was
an avid advocate for handicapped people’s rights.
Her and Edward Calcote were married July of 1982 and were blessed with two children: Kyle
and Ashleigh. Moving between Arkansas, Louisiana, and eventually Texas - Amy worked as a
social worker rendering assistance to people with disabilities and mental illness until committing
fully to homeschooling her two children full time.
A devout Jew, Amy was an integral fixture of the Congregation Shaar Hashalom in Houston,
Texas. She was a lover of books and stories, an active volunteer for the Red Cross, and the
support team for many a bowling event.
But above any list of accomplishments or events, she loved and was loved - and her presence
shall be deeply missed.
She is survived by her two children, Kyle Calcote and Ashleigh Calcote, as well as her brother
Kade Mendelowitz. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Calcote, and her sister
Kadeen Mendelowitz
Her funeral will be held graveside this upcoming Wednesday, September 27th at 2:30pm in
Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster, Texas.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ForestParkEast-FHC.com for the Calcote family.
