She came to Galveston by train in 1943. She married in 1947, to the love of her life, Joseph V. Contella. They were blessed with two daughters, Cindy & Paula and two precious Grandsons; Joey & Jon Ringer. Her husband Joseph Vernon died at an early age of 43 and she later re-married to George Carpenter, Jr.
Betty attended the Metropolitan School of Business, where she received her diploma as a steno/typist. Betty worked for the Galveston Daily News, G & H Towing, numerous Chemical companies and she retired from GAF as plant secretary.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph V. Contella, daughter Cindy Contella Ringer and Grandson Jon Ringer, second husband George Carpenter, Jr. Brother Jack Renfro (Grace) Sisters Faye Tyler (Groby) & Lucy McNamara.
She is survived by daughter Paula Contella Matranga and son-in-law Charlie, Grandson Joey Ringer and Sister Aline McNeal Shofner, along with numerous Nieces and Nephews.
She was a very kind, devoted Mother, Wife, Grandmother, Sister & Aunt. She loved the challenge of a difficult crossword puzzle, loved to play Scrabble and was delightfully quick witted. She loved the joy of laughter. When she attended a function at pot luck in the community often people talked about their overseas trips/visits and she would say “well we just traveled to Kroger and visited the International aisle and were able to see all the countries in one shot”. Her humor as well as her kind, compassionate heart will truly be missed by all. She was much loved.
A special thank you to Dr. Harvey Slusky & Dr. Chin, for the excellent care and compassion our Mother and Nanny received.
