Betty Jean Thompson

Betty Jean "Jeanie" Thompson, 83, of San Leon, Texas, passed away August 24, 2026. Born in Houston, TX on February 10, 1943, she was the daughter of Paul and Lucille Bates. From the very beginning, Jeanie carried herself with a take-charge spirit—never shy about having an opinion, never hesitant to step in, and often guiding the room with a firm hand and a certain unmistakable presence.

Jeanie was a graduate of Clear Creek High School and attended Durham Business School, building the skill and precision that would serve her well throughout a remarkable working life. She worked in aerospace for NASA known as a professional typist and contributing to Apollo Missions through communication and messages—serious, detailed work that demanded focus and confidence. Jeanie later spent 32 years with Houston Lighting and Power as an office manager—an authority in her own right, someone people counted on to keep things moving and get things done.

On October 31, 1964, she married Charles Warren Thompson, and they shared 45 years of marriage. In the life they built, those who knew Jeanie understood that she brought structure and direction alongside devotion—expressed in the everyday ways a family is held together. After Charles’s passing, the strength of her voice and the steadiness of her ways remained part of the family’s rhythm and memory.

Outside of work, Jeanie embraced the joys that made life feel full: a passion for dancing and shooting pool, time spent fishing and shrimping on the Pogy Boat, and weekend BBQs that brought people together the way she liked best—on her terms, with everyone well-fed and accounted for. Her energy could be brisk, her standards clear, and her love unmistakably present in the way she organized, encouraged, and kept the world around her in line.

Jeanie was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Warren Thompson; her parents, Paul and Lucille Bates; and her two brothers, Paul Bates and Raymond Bates.

She is survived by her sons, Warren Thompson and his wife Sheila, Jeff Thompson and his wife Tammie, and Scott Thompson; grandchildren Amber High, Robbie Thompson, Meagan Hook, Kristin Clark, Kaitlyn LaMora, Kennedy Thompson, Charlie Thompson, and Corbin Thompson; 13 great-grandchildren; her twin sister Bertie Simmons; her sister-in-law Sandy Bates; along with numerous loving nieces and nephews.

Jeanie’s life was one of responsibility, determination, and impact—marked by years of dedicated work, deep family ties, and a spirit that rarely waited for permission. She will be remembered with gratitude, affection, and smiles for the unmistakable way she made sure everything—and everyone—stayed on track.
