Charles “Charlie” Hays Walker, 86, of Waxahachie, Texas, died Wednesday morning, March 20, 2019, with his children at his side, at which point he realized the hope of eternity and met his Savior face to face. He will be remembered as a loving man of strong faith who loved God, his family, and his church, and who never met a stranger. His family and friends knew him as a serving, generous, kind, funny, and hard-working follower of Jesus Christ. He loved cartoons, travel, woodworking, and playing family games.
He was a compassionate, devoted and committed husband who set an example of loving and caregiving. Charlie married Mary Jo Morgan in 1954, and they raised four children. He faithfully cared for Mary Jo until heart disease ended her life in 1982. He married Marian (Rosbrugh) Dawson in 1984, added three more children to the family, and lovingly cared for her through a long battle with cancer, which ended her life in 2006.
Charlie enlisted in the Air Force in 1951, and after his 4-year stint, he entered public service as an electronics technician for the Federal Aviation Administration. He was diligent and dedicated, a hard worker who planned adventurous camping vacations all around the country. He chose a rotating shift schedule that, while it created unusual timing for birthday and Christmas celebrations, provided a debt-free college education at Christian universities for all four of his kids.
Charlie was a godly man and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who leaves a legacy of faith, friendship, generosity and laughter. He loved the Lord and loved the Church of the Nazarene. He taught Sunday School, sang in the church choir, served as church treasurer and board member, drove kids to camp and on choir tours, and used his skills to keep buildings, property, and vehicles in good shape. He spent many hours creating gifts and furniture for family and friends and telling stories about his rich life. He loved well and deeply, served long and faithfully, and gave often and generously.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents Frank H. Walker and Myrtle Mae Walker Neuhauser, his stepfather Chuck Neuhauser, his first wife Mary Jo, and his second wife Marian.
Charlie is survived by his children: Grace Walker, David Walker and his wife Debbie, Angela Walker, Melanie Galbraith and her husband Jon, Lucile Dawson, Wayne Dawson and his wife Robin, and Eric Dawson and his wife Carol. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Nicole, Natalie, Mary Jo, Jared, James, Roxanne, Michelle, Andrew, Hannah, Paul, Luke and Ruth; and his great-grandchildren: McKennon, Audrey, Truett, Axell, Henley, and Harper. He is also survived by his brother Richard of St. Louis, adopted family Michael, Rachel and Deborah McCarty, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a vast multitude of people who considered him their friend.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, March 30, 2019, 11:00a.m., at the Living Hope Church of the Nazarene: 2420 Brown St., Waxahachie, TX. Flowers may be sent to The Shepherd’s House Church of the Nazarene: 3221 Mockingbird Ln, Midlothian, TX.
