Doris Aileen Herod

Doris Aileen Herod (Spiller) was born March 6, 1928, to Dewey Dewitt and Dorothy Mae Spiller in Freeport, Texas. She had an older sister Margaret "Peggy" Real, a younger brother Donald Dean Spiller, and her younger sister Patricia Green, who also preceded her in eternal life with Christ. Doris graduated from Freeport High School. Her favorite story to tell about her school years was being followed to school by a duck. She met the love of her life Dan Herod while he was living in Freeport and attending 1st Baptist Freeport. They were married on December 23, 1950. Together they settled in Pasadena and created a family. Through their 35 years of marriage their partnership taught all of us unconditional love, patience, and true partnership even beyond earthly life into their eternal rest. Their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are a direct reflection of the foundation they built together.

Doris lived her life as a daily reflection of Jesus’s love and was always active in prayer groups wherever she was. We always knew who to call if we needed someone to be our prayer warrior, but she would be quick to make sure we knew that things would always happen in God's timing, that sometimes God had a very funny sense of humor, and that loving like Jesus didn't always mean being nice. She never forgot what you asked her to pray for and would ask you about it when you least expected it. She was an active member of 1st Baptist Pasadena especially with her Sunday School class until she moved to Sugar Land. She loved listening to hymns and gospel music, especially once she could no longer attend weekly service.

Doris found her greatest joy in family. When her children were young that meant throwing herself into their world and volunteering in the PTA. She loved keeping everyone connected even as her family continued to grow. She hosted family gatherings, attended family reunions, traveled to visit family, and babysat all the little ones as she was able. No matter how you were related to Doris you always felt welcomed, cherished, and loved.

From the time she moved until her eyes could no longer see well, she was very active in the book club at Brookdale and enjoyed reading cozy mysteries, historical fiction, and political memoirs. Doris also loved going to the hair salon and getting her nails done. Doris never missed a chance to cheer on the Texas Longhorns or the Astros.

She is survived by her children Candace (& Val) Smits and Dan (& Susan) Herod; Her grandchildren: Kristin Smits, Kara (& Anand) Raghavan, Daniel (& Deven) Herod, and Bonnie Herod; Her great granddaughters: Carlyn Herod, Mira Raghavan, Silah Herod, & Nora Raghavan. She is also survived by her many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces, great great nephews, great great great nieces and great great great nephews.

Doris will be honored at Forest Park East Funeral Home, 21620 Gulf Fwy, Webster, TX 77598, with visitation on Friday, August 7, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, followed by the Funeral Service from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm, and committal from 3:30 pm to 4:00 pm.
