Ester Ybarra Canady, 96, passed away on January 9, 2021 at her home in League City, Texas.

Ester was born in Los Fresnos, Texas on September 16, 1924. She moved to League City with her husband, R.B. Canady, and their children in 1950 when R.B. got a job at the local fig plant.

Ester loved spending time outside working in her yard and flowerbeds, cooking her famous bean tacos for anyone who walked into her kitchen, and spending time with her family. She was the type of person that had never met a stranger. No matter who she was around, she always made them feel like they were a dear friend or part of her family. She was kind and generous—always lending a helping hand to those who needed it.

Ester, better known as Grandma or Grandma Ester, was an amazing grandmother. She often had her grandkids piled in her living room for sleepovers. She took them out and taught them how to find deals at garage sales and how to plant and care for flowers and trees. Most importantly, she taught them how to love unconditionally. They always knew that no matter what was going on in their lives, their grandma would be there to love them through it and maybe even swat them with her cane if they needed it.

Ester was preceded in death by her husband R.B. Canady; her parents-Simon and Manuela Ybarra; and her sisters-Maria Castillo, Josephine Yoakum and Jesusa Sanchez. She is survived by two brothers and one sister-Elpidio Ybarra, Juan Ybarra, and Trini Ybarra; five children-Raul De Los Santos and his wife Bernie De Los Santos, Connie Henson, Ruby Treviño, Emmitt Canady, and Geneva Murphy; twelve grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

When I was very little I had mom in a panic looking for me. The whole neighborhood was looking for me. And where did they find me, in a wheelbarrow at Grandma Ester’s yard. I loved my Grandma Ester and especially her cooking. We love you Grandma Ester and we will miss you. You are finally back with R.B. Now you can cook for him again
