Eugene H. (Gene) McWhirter, 86, of Houston, Texas, beloved father, Papaw, great Papaw, and devoted husband, passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013. He was born February 22, 1926 in Princeton, Texas to Eula & Eslie McWhirter. After graduating from high school in 1943 in Wichita Falls, TX, he joined the US Navy, attending the University of Texas V-12 program and graduating with a degree in electrical engineering in 1946. After moving to Houston he met and married his wife of 59 years, Lila Elizabeth (Liz) McWhirter on April 17, 1953. Gene worked for and retired from Hughes Tool Co. in 1983 after 38 years of service. He is survived by his wife Liz, sister Betty Jacobs of Rogers, Arkansas, son Byron and his wife Marcy of Atlantic Beach, Florida, daughter Karen of Houston, grandchildren Scott McWhirter of Houston, Laura Edwards and husband John of Kannapolis, NC, and great granddaughter Mia Edwards,as well as several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held Monday, February 25 from 6-8 pm at Forest Park East. The funeral service will be held Tuesday February 26 at 10am. Graveside service immediately following with military honors.
