George Lopez

George Lopez of Houston, TX passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. George was a beloved and cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend.

Born on November 16, 1930, in Hungerford, TX to the late Julian and Mary Lopez. George was raised in Wharton and graduated from Hungerford Rural High School in 1948. He furthered his education at Wharton County Junior College, earning a bachelor’s degree in business in 1952.

Shortly after, he was drafted into the US Army and served during the Korean War. At the time of his honorable discharge, he was at the rank of Corporal.

In 1959, George married Sarah Ruth Rangel after meeting in Newgulf, TX. They both were actively involved in their church throughout their marriage. They had three daughters: Rachel, Rebecca, and Rhoda. Sadly, Sarah passed away from cancer on December 17, 1980.

George later met Victoria M. Castillo, a widow with four children, while working at the church. Their family grew with the birth of their son, Richard Lopez. Together, George and Victoria dedicated their lives to Templo Samaria in Houston. He worked for Farmers Typewriter as a typewriter repairman for over 25 years. He served as official secretary for Templo Samaria for over 40 years and served as treasurer for Latin American Council of Christian Churches for many years. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing and traveling with his wife Victoria. In his final years he was a member of Templo Bethel in Houston, TX.

George is survived by his children, Rebecca (Robert) Busby, Rhoda (Terry) Pilcher, Elizabeth (Nathan) Figueroa, George Castillo, Pete (Alma) Castillo, Adam (Maggie) Castillo and Richard Lopez. 15 grandchildren, Matthew Busby, Jonathon (Ana) Bass, Kenneth (Brandi) Figueroa, Katelyn (Raul) Ramos, Nathan Figueroa II, Ashley Castillo, Michael (Stephanie) Castillo, Carley (Ismael) Zuniga, Elizabeth (Avery) Murdock, Eric Molinar, Samantha, Irene & Isaiah Castillo, Lylie & Evelyn Lopez.13 great- grandchildren, Joanna Bass, Owen, Morgan & Matthew Figueroa, Fallon & Solomon Ramos, Casey & Andie Figueroa, Seth Thomas Lara, Emma, Elena and Ismael III Zuniga, Luke Murdock.

George is preceded in death by his parents, Julian and Mary Lopez, wives Sarah and Victoria, brother Damacio Lopez, sister Margarita Lopez Mejorado, and daughter Rachel Lopez.
