Hollis James Naquin passed away on Thursday, September 23rd peacefully in his sleep. He had just celebrated his 84th birthday with family all around him the week prior. Hollis was born on September 17, 1937 in Goose Creek, Texas to Martha Louise Barrow and Abbey James Naquin. He was lovingly raised by his grandparents Benjamin Barrow (Big Dad) & Ella Gertrude Smith Barrow, “Omamama”, in Barbers Hill, Texas where he lived until he left for college.
Hollis had a lifelong love of many things and amongst them was sports. At Barbers Hill High School he excelled in sports and academics. He was on the State Champion Track Team in 1956. He ran the 440 relay and the record he set held in the state of Texas for over 5 years. He was all district baseball, basketball, football and track from 1953 to 1956. He was the President of his senior class and voted Most Handsome in his yearbook. Years later he was honored by Barbers Hill School District by being inducted into their sports' Hall of Fame for his accomplishments during his time there. He was awarded a basketball scholarship to Lon Morris College then transferred to Sam Houston State University.
It was there at Sam Houston State that Hollis met his beloved wife Pat Price in 1960. He was a senior and she was a freshman. They married in March of 1961 and together they had 2 children, Price English and Sage Holli Bara. The family moved to the Sagemont area in 1967 and this is where they spent the next 25 years.
Hollis enjoyed a prosperous and fulfilling career. The first 5 years of their married life he coached football, basketball and track at Channelview ISD. After that he worked for Brown & Root Pipeline Division as Administrative Manager for 22 years, then moved on to Offshore Pipeline as a Corporate Treasury Manager. The family soon moved to Pearland. Hollis worked for several different pipeline companies, then finished his career at J Ray McDermott as a Project Administrator and he retired blissfully in 1998. Hollis spent the remaining years of his life doting on his grandchildren, traveling with his wife, hunting with his family, hunting with his best pal CT Gore and the Gore family, mowing the grass on his precious farm for all to enjoy, and always ending the day with a fireside rest next to his bride.
In 2017, Hollis and Pat decided to retire to Lovelady, TX where Pat’s parents were born and raised and built a log cabin on family land. They chose Lovelady United Methodist as their permanent church home.
He is survived by his wife, Pat, his son Price Naquin, his daughter Sage Holli Bara, his daughter in law Debbie Naquin, his 5 grown grandchildren: Allann and husband Bill Arnold, Taylor and husband Matt deClercq, Matthew Campbell, Abby Naquin and fiancé Ani Avagyan, Allison and husband Kenny Resendez, his four great grandchildren: Jet deClercq, Quin deClercq, Waylon Arnold and Josephine Resendez, his brother-in-law Dexter Price and fiancé Carol McBee, his nephew Dewitt Robinson and wife Diana and their family, as well as numerous extended family members.
He is preceded in death by his father Abbey, grandfather Big Dad/Ben, grandmother Omamama/Ella, Aunt Oma Sigas, mother Martha, brother-in-law Les Robinson, nephew Darren Price, father-in-law Louie Price, mother-in-law Etha Price, sister Ella Robinson, and his sister-in-law Donna Price.
Hollis’ life was rich and full and he will be gravely missed by all who knew him. He was the patriarch to his abundant and growing family; his most important roles being Dad to his two children, and the man, the myth, the legend, “Papa” to his five grandchildren, their spouses and their children. He could often be heard playing guitar and singing his favorite songs, a memory both his children and grandchildren share of him. He loved to cook and was excellent at it. He loved to dance the jitterbug with Pat, hunt and fish, to play 42, he loved his church, his farm and his family.
His family and friends will honor him with a Memorial Service on October 7th at 2PM at Forest Park East Funeral Home and Cemetery (21620 Gulf Freeway, Webster, TX 77598) and in addition honor him with a Celebration of Life at the farm on October 24th at 1:30PM (1770 CR 3635 W, Lovelady, TX 75851).
