

James Calvin Smith of Houston, Texas, 93, died suddenly of natural causes Monday, November 16, 2015 at his home. Preceded in death by his son David Lancaster Smith. He leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Peggy Jo Smith; his daughter, Susan Ann Smith-Sheikh; grand-son Austin Vaughn and many, many friends and relatives. Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas the son of Joel Lancaster Smith and Elizabeth Belle Keffer he was one of five siblings (four brothers and a sister). In his early years he was very active in his community having participated in various sports and activities at Hot Wells School while working to help support his family. He was the first of his siblings to attend/finish college. He began his schooling on a basketball scholarship at Sam Houston State University but it was quickly interrupted by World War II. He served his country in the Air Force as a pilot and finished college at the University of Texas at Austin on the GI Bill. With a degree in Business Administration (BBA) he went to work for Schlumberger. He was also in the reserves during these years. He retired from Schlumberger in the early 80s and also earned his military retirement around the same time. An avid sportsman and animal lover, Mr. Smith enjoyed golf, basketball, football, hunting and others. He was very active in his community through his church, Crossroads United Methodist. Funeral services were held November 24th, 2015 in honor of Mr. Smith. We would be remiss to not mention that Mr. Smith came from a generation when people valued faith, family, hard work, integrity and grit. He lived his entire life based on these virtues. His passion and dedication for life will continue to resonate for years to come amongst his family and friends. Services were held on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at Forest Park East Funeral Home in Webster, Texas.
