

John Robert "Popo" Moran passed away August 27, 2010. Born in Los Angeles, California on December 15, 1913 to John Robert Moran and Mary Pearl Gordon Moran. Baptized on his 7th birthday Dec 15, 1920 in San Bernardino, California. Graduated from Gretna High School in Gretna, Louisiana in 1932. He began working for Lykes Brothers Steamship Co. as a cadet in 1932 to 1940. During that time he achieved the status of Chiefmate. 1940 to 1948 he worked for Pan American Airways as a flight navigator. During WWII, he was on loan from Pan American to the Armed Forces. He set up a school and was a Navigator instructor in Miami, Florida until 1945. After the war, he returned to New York and continued working for Pan American as a flight navigator until 1948. In 1948, he left New York and moved to Needles, California where he built and operated the Lazy J Motel. In 1951, he moved to Houston, Texas and went back to work for Lykes Brothers Steamship Co. as a Stevedore Supervisor at the Port of Houston until he retired in 1982. He was an active member of the Odd Fellows Lodge for 62 years. On December 29, 1938, he married the love of his life, Mary Dean Smith, in Brownwood, Texas. They were married for 58 years and 8 months when she preceded him in death. John is survived by son, John R. "Jack" Moran; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia & Larry Eubanks; four grandchildren and their spouses; Dawna & David Dyson, John & Cheri Moran, Paula & Jeff Owens and Ross & Kerrie Eubanks; five great grandchildren, Emily Dyson, Jessica Crane, Weston Owens, Clare Owens & Hudson Eubanks. Visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m. until services at 12:30 p.m. Monday, August 30, 2010 in the Chapel at Forest Park East Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Forest Park East Cemetery. Fr. Stan Gerber of St. Timothy's Anglican Church will officiate. Grandson Ross Eubanks will share with a Eulogy. Serving as pallbearers are David Dyson, Ross Eubanks, Larry Eubanks, John Moran, Jeff Owens and Weston Owens.
