Joe R. Cárdenas, a devoted husband, father, and proud law enforcement officer, passed away in Houston, Texas on Sunday, August 2, 2026. He was born in Laredo, Texas and built a life defined by hard work, family and religious devotion, and an unmistakable gift for talking about anything and everything especially fond memories of his life and family.
For 58 years, Joe was married to his beloved wife, Graciela Cárdenas. Together they raised five children, moving the family from San Antonio to Houston in 1969 in pursuit of greater opportunity. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family—holding jobs as a truck driver for a meat packing company, head of security, and ultimately as a law enforcement officer in San Antonio, Texas. He also attended Alvin Community College to advance his career in law enforcement.
Joe's children were his greatest pride, and he found equal joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was known for long, winding conversations, never missing a chance to share stories about his kids or the life he built with Graciela. His signature phrases ”dumb boy," "whatever," and other sly phrases to his kids and grandkids followed by a chuckle—will be remembered by all who knew him.
He especially loved it when family gathered, and those moments of togetherness brought him his greatest happiness.
Joe is survived by his wife, Graciela Cardenas; his children, Bobby Cardenas (Martha Molina), Imelda (Mel) Cardenas, Montes (Jack P. Montes), Brenda Cardenas (Horacio “Flaco” DonJuan), Ruben Cardenas (Marcie Cardenas), Judy Cardenas-Valdez (Carlos Valdez); Grandkids, Joseph Cardenas, Denieve Blanco, Kristie DonJuan, Macalyn, Ruben Jr., Giselle, and Anthony Cardenas, Malaina, Maiah, Madisen and Julius Valdez; Great Grandkids Eli (EZ), Emalee Cardenas, Xavier (XJ) and Logan Blanco, Kayden Hernandez, Kamryn Reyes and Kyler Reyes, Kali Reyes, Twins, Amor and Isiah Cardenas and numerous family members.
