Heaven must have been a truly joyful place when Joyce Jamison Wood Skyles arrived on May 2, 2026. Although she was surrounded by her family at the time of her peaceful passing, Joyce was eager to meet her loving God and reunite with the special people in her life who had preceded her in death.
Joyce’s favorite color, bright yellow, perfectly reflected her warm and joyful personality. She was born on March 3, 1933, in Vicksburg, Mississippi to Annabell Parker Jamison and Thomas Alexander Jamison. Vicksburg is also where she met the love of her life James Arthur “Buddy” Wood.
After graduating from The University of Southern Mississippi with a Physical Education degree, Joyce married Buddy and together they built a loving home and had four children. Joyce treasured her role as a full-time mother embracing every opportunity to pour love and kindness, and encouragement into the lives of her children and their friends. Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and welcome and her joyful spirit touched all who knew her.
Joyce enjoyed a variety of interests her entire adult life. She loved playing bridge and following all her children’s’ sports, concerts, and performances. As Joyce continued to enjoy life, she participated in multiple bridge groups and even played Bingo. Devotion comes to mind when you remember her love of the QVC shopping network and the hundreds of purchases she made through the channel, mostly clothes. But her biggest love was reserved for the Astros. She truly was their number one fan. From her jerseys, home decor items and even touring their stadium, she fanatically followed every game.
Joyce will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her laughter, and the bright light she brought into the lives of others. Her legacy of love and devotion lives on through her family and the many people blessed to know her.
Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband James Arthur “Buddy” Wood with whom she shared many devoted years of marriage, and her oldest son, Stephen Clifford Wood. Later in life, Joyce was blessed to find love again when she married the Reverend Benjamin Skyles, who also preceded her in death.
She leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory always: David Wood (Kathy), Sharon Burch (Steve) and Donnie Wood (Melodie). Joyce’s greatest joy was celebrating family events with her grandchildren: Brigid and Mathew Wood, Jason Lambert, Tina Hernandez, Cory Wood, Jake Wood, Ryan Wood, Rachel Buxton, Jaclyn LeFebre, Jonathan Burch and Melynda Wood. She was also blessed with 11 great-grandchildren each who brought much happiness to her life.
Joyce will be remembered for her Southern charm, love of laughter, deep faith, and the love she so generously shared with all who knew her.
A time for guests to visit with the family will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, with a memorial service to start at 2:00 pm and a reception to follow. All services will be held at Forest Park East Funeral Home, located at 21620 Gulf Freeway, in Webster, Texas.
