Leon Harris, a devoted husband, dedicated soldier, and lifelong learner, passed away on August 17, 2025, at 47. His journey through life was marked by unwavering service to his country, an insatiable curiosity for knowledge, and a deep love for the natural world that surrounded him.
Those who knew Leon understood him as a man of quiet strength and genuine compassion. His character was forged through decades of military service, yet softened by his appreciation for life's simple pleasures, such as casting a line into still waters, breathing in the crisp air of a mountain campsite, and engaging in spirited discussions about the political landscape he followed closely. Leon possessed that rare combination of disciplined professionalism and authentic warmth that drew people to him naturally.
Leon's military career spanned over two decades of distinguished service in the United States Army, where he served as both a Cannon Crew Member and an Aviation Operations Specialist Level 3. His commitment to excellence and leadership took him to some of the world's most challenging environments, including deployments to Iraq from 2005 to 2006 and Afghanistan from 2013 to 2014. Throughout his service, Leon embodied Army values not just in uniform, but in every aspect of his life.
His dedication did not go unrecognized. Among his many honors, Leon earned the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with a campaign star, the Iraq Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal (second award). His five Army Good Conduct Medals spoke to his consistent character, while his Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal reflected his commitment to serving others beyond the call of duty. The Gold Recruiter Badge with three-star sapphires demonstrated his ability to inspire others to serve, sharing his passion for military life with the next generation.
Leon's pursuit of knowledge never ceased, even after hanging up his uniform. In a testament to his belief in lifelong learning, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Walden University on May 19, 2024, an achievement that filled him with immense pride and opened doors to new possibilities. At the time of his passing, he was actively pursuing his master's degree, embodying the same determination that had carried him through military campaigns and decades of service.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Leon found his greatest joy in life's diverse experiences. Whether he was patiently waiting for fish to bite, setting up camp under a canopy of stars, discovering new flavors at a local restaurant, or exploring unfamiliar destinations, he understood that life's richest experiences often came from embracing curiosity and adventure. His volunteer work with veteran-led initiatives reflected his continued commitment to his fellow veterans, ensuring that the bonds forged in service extended far beyond active duty.
Leon is survived by his beloved spouse, Maxine Peters Harris. Their partnership enriched his life and served as the cornerstone for shared achievements, reflecting their beautiful bond. He is also survived by his foster parents, Marcia and Lee Lowe; his brother and sisters; extended family; and countless friends he touched through his service and friendship.
His legacy lives on in every veteran he helped through his volunteer work, every solider he mentored during his recruiting duties, and every family member who witnessed his quiet determination to better himself and serve others. Leon's life reminds us that true success is measured not by personal accolades but by the positive impact we have on the lives of others.
A visitation will be held on Friday, September 12, 2025, at Forest Park East Funeral Home, 21620 Gulf Fwy Webster, TX 77598 from 8am until 1pm.
