Leonard Wayne Lunsford, 76, passed away on September 30, 2025, in South Houston, Texas. Born on October 29, 1948, in Sherman, Texas, Leonard lived a life marked by curiosity, dedication, and a deep appreciation for literature and storytelling.
A proud graduate of South Houston High School’s Class of 1966, Leonard began his working life delivering newspapers for the Houston Chronicle. His early career also included developing photographs at Fox Photo—a role that reflected his attention to detail and appreciation for capturing moments. He later found long-term employment as an Operator with Phillips 66, where he concluded his professional journey with steadfast commitment.
Leonard served his country honorably in the United States Navy and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. He served on the USS America from 1982-1988. He took part in the raid on Libya. His time in the military was a meaningful chapter in his life and one that shaped his disciplined nature and enduring sense of duty.
Leonard had a lifelong passion for books and movies. He especially admired the works of Edgar Allan Poe and possessed an extraordinary memory that allowed him to recite Poe’s stories from heart—an ability that often amazed those around him. His love for storytelling extended beyond reading; it was woven into conversations and recollections shared with friends and family alike.
Among his favorite pastimes were collecting and discussing guns, immersing himself in books of all kinds, and enjoying classic films. These interests brought him joy throughout his life and connected him with others who shared similar passions.
Leonard’s neighbors remember him fondly as he was always willing to help when needed. His family members have several memories from helping him throw the newspaper, going to the movies, learning how to drive, going to Autorama events, attending birthday parties and holiday gatherings and he always sent out Christmas cards to everyone.
Leonard is survived by his brother David Mack Lunsford, along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who will remember him fondly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lois and Will T. Lunsford; his sisters Frances Walker and Brenda Haynes.
