

Macon was born in Wilson County, Texas to Alvin and Geneva Hawkins on March 1,1937. He grew up with his siblings in the area and graduated from Stockdale High School where he played in the marching band. Macon joined the Air Force Reserves after school and served for eight years. During this time he started his family, eventually having four children.
Macon’s work took him to many places, both domestic and international. He enjoyed a remarkable and distinguished career as a project manager in construction engineering with Brown & Root. He continued in the petroleum and petrochemical industries for years. After retiring from Brown and Root, he started several businesses with partners and solo.
One notable event happened in 2006 when he was kidnapped by Nigerian militants. Taken hostage and held for two weeks, he was released first because of his winning personality. He made the cover of Time Magazine and was interviewed on the Larry King show.
After retiring, he delighted in living a cowboy life on his ranch in Kosciusko,Texas. He loved his horses, cattle, and dogs. He enjoyed this for a few years before his failing health brought him back to Houston, Texas. He lived with his youngest daughter Sharon and former wife Frankie, both of which were his caretakers until Frankie's death in 2018. He suffered many health problems that took his life.
During his life, Macon had many hobbies and interests. He loved cars, once stating that he wanted to be a hot rod racer. He was an outdoorsman, was fond of hunting, and collected guns. Even his television time was spent on outdoor shows, Westerns, or farm and ranch shows. Macon had a passion for life, studying his genealogy, being with family, and especially enjoyed large family gatherings where he could chat with people and catch up. Macon relished great food, going out to eat; but especially liked home cooked meals.
Macon was a giver, and many people have been thankful over the years for the help they received from him. He freely gave without expectation. He had an infectious smile and greeting for every person he met. Sometimes you were the receiver of his special, loving nicknames. He loved people.
Macon Vol Hawkins was preceded in death by his father, Alvin Hawkins; his mother, Geneva Foytek; his brother, Alvin Wade Hawkins and wife, Betty Hawkins; his sister, Caroline Cone and husband, R.L. Cone, Jr.; his brother-in-law, James West; his former wife, Frankie Hawkins; his son-in-law, Russell Williams; his grandson, Dustin Hawkins; and his granddaughter, Erika Skrzypczak.
He is survived by his sister, Lee West; his children, Alvin Mark Hawkins, Teresa Skrzypczak and son-in-law, Joe Skrzypczak, Donna Williams, Sharon Hawkins, and stepdaughter, Dionne Rosal; his grandchildren, Carl Skrzypczak, Genise Youngblood and her husband, Dillon, Katrina Williams, Arabella Lovelace, Zelia Yocham, Geneva Yocham, and his six great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 27th, at 10:00 A.M., Forest Park East, 21620 Gulf Freeway, Webster, Texas 77598, and a burial service will be held on Saturday, September 28th at 10:00 A.M. at Steele Branch Cemetery, Stockdale, Texas.
