Maggie Lee Downey, 78, passed peacefully on November 17, 2025. Born in Huntsville, Texas, and a longtime resident of La Porte, Texas, Maggie lived a life defined by generosity, joy, and wholehearted love.
She modeled the values of hard work and perseverance as a proud retiree of the University of Texas School of Nursing and modeled deep faith and service as a humble Jehovah’s Witness. Above all, Maggie had a gift for embracing people as family. She was a mother not only to her own children, but to countless others—bonus children, nieces, nephews, neighborhood kids, and anyone who needed a warm heart and open arms.
Maggie loved music and loved to laugh. Known as the family’s Dancing Queen, she brought life to every room she entered. She was a fierce Spades player, garage sale aficionado, wonderful friend, and a truly great neighbor—someone people could depend on and feel at home with.
Maggie was preceded in death by her mother Lena Mae Crawford, father John Henry Perkins, sisters Dorothy Mae Perkins and Mattie Jewel Jenkins, and grandson Joseph C Williams, III.
She is survived by her siblings Eva Spencer, Paul Johnson (Alice), Jeanette Ingraham (William), Donnie Harrison (Shaniquwa), John Harrison (Christie), Monica Lee (Leslie), and Bonnie Harrison. She leaves behind her beloved children Felicia Williams (Joseph), Kevin Perkins (Felita), Charles O. Downey, Jr., and Sapphire Jule King; and bonus children Deidra Holmes (Darrell), Tamisha Figaro, and Meocha Guice (Dexter).
Maggie is also survived by her grandchildren Victor Perkins, Phillice Walley (Quincy), Kevin Perkins II, Kendrick Perkins (Julianne), Carlishia Joubert, Chauncey Joubert, Angeliese Williams, and her cherished grandkitten Simba Jai King. She is remembered lovingly by her niece and nephews Elreed Bellard Jr. (Den), Waylon Bellard (Brigette), Modesta Williams (Anthony), Darrell Bellard, Lewis Jenkins III, Kirby Jenkins, and Shedrick Jenkins; her 17 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives, extended family, and dear friends.
Maggie was truly spoiled by those who loved her—and she deserved every bit of it. Her warmth, humor, and unwavering kindness will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7
