Martin Meer, 85, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Sept 5th at 11:30 am, holding the hand of his dear adopted son-in-law, Jake (Yaacov). We all believe he was reunited with the love of his life, Judy, who he would have been married to for 60 years this coming February.
Marty, as he was known to all of his loved ones, was born on December 13, 1937 in Scranton, PA. He was one of 2 children of Jacob Meer and Miriam Smulowitz. Marilyn, Marty's older sister by 5 years, fondly remembers his competitive nature. Marty loved being in the cub scouts, boy scouts (Troop 65) at Temple Israel and made it as far as the Eagle Scouts, which was unheard of at the time. Marty, later, became an avid Tennis and golf player and loved all sports. Marty also loved watching all sports as well, especially the Astros, in which he holds a lot of pride for their World Series wins. Marty stayed busy in his later life, enjoying learning how to play bridge, engaging in Poker, eating with the Romeo's (retired old men eating out), and enjoying the company of his wonderful friends.
Marty married Judy, February 2, 1964, the love of his life. They had 2 children, Jack and Leslie, and grandson Gunner, as well as his adopted children Jake and Shoshana, granddaughter Kaila and her husband Calvin and his 2 great-grandchildren Rosie and Isaiah.
Marty attended Penn State in the ROTC program, and is also an ardent Penn State fan, attending many games in the latter part of his life.
Marty served 26 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Colonel. After retirement from the USAF, he went to work at Boeing in the Nasa space program for 20 years, which included working on the Space Shuttle. One of our highlights is the "Marty Party", which celebrated 2 very distinguished careers on his 70th birthday, just 15 years ago. Marty and Judy have been members of Congregation Shaar Hashalom for 47 years, creating a beautiful Chavera (friendship group), and being extremely active in the Synagogue and Greater Houston Jewish community. Marty and Judy were also involved in Temple Beth El in Santa Maria, where he served as Temple President and was known to all as an amazing Confirmation teacher and Jewish educator.
Marty, lost his father who was only 59, which has made him a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and incredible role model for all. We have all been touched by Marty's warmth, generosity, sense of humor, compassion and love. It is an honor today to fulfill paying tribute to the ideals that motivated Marty's most esteemed life. In the process of remembering this brilliant soul, we ourselves must aspire to emulate the very noble example he has set for us.
Marty is preceded in death by his wife Judy and son Jack.
