Mary Frances Johnson Murphy age 86, of Pasadena, Texas passed peacefully into the arms of her Savior May 6, 2018. Born on a farm in Cordele, GA June 30, 1931. Mary loved, nurtured, and cared for her family and friends; a fantastic cook and liked to gather her family around special occasions. She was so proud of her family especially her grandchildren. Mary graduated from Perry Business School in 1955 after the death of her first husband Melvin Gloss in 1954.
She married Henry G. Murphy Jr. of St. Petersburg, FL in 1957; together they had one child Marilyn Frances Murphy Bass. In 1959, they moved to Houston, Texas where Mary went to work as a bookkeeper for Contractors Supply and Lumber and later as a secretary for the director of nurses at Southmore Hospital and Baytown Hospital. In the 1972 Mary and Henry became self-employed running a catering business until they retired in 1990. Mary enjoyed traveling with Henry in their RV, flounder fishing at Roll-over Pass and spending time with their grandchildren until Henry passed in 1997. Mary attended Sagemont Church where she was active in her Sunday school class and church group Cut Ups. Over the next few years in her 80’s she became a host mother for 4 foreign exchange students. She provided a home, meals and guidance for two high school boys, Ray and Zech, from Beijing China; one young man named Jung from Sol Korea, and a young female college student named Atti. She was always giving of herself and anything she had to others and just wanted each person she met to feel important and loved.
Preceded in death were her parents Reuben W. Johnson and Janie E. Gleaton Johnson; brother James Waylon; sister Hazel Mouser and brother Frankie Lamar.
Those left to honor and celebrate her life are daughter Marilyn Frances Bass (Cary) of Pasadena, TX, step daughter Caroline Lemos (George “Kim”) of St. Petersburg, FL, grandchildren Brandon Bass (Christina) of Clear Lake Shores, TX, Joshua Bass (Magen) of League City, TX, Ariel Bass of Houston, TX, and Michael Lemos of St. Petersburg, FL; great-grandchildren Auburn Bass, Destinee and Jayden Lemos; two sisters-in-law; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; and her little dog, Sugar.
A graveside service will be held at Forest Park East Funeral Home and Cemetery on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Sagemont Church.
