Born on January 1, 1932, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Maureen was the beloved daughter of Jessie Green and Pauline Davis Green. She graduated from Boston High School in 1952 and later attended McNeese State College, where she proudly became one of the first twenty African American students to integrate the institution — a milestone that reflected her quiet courage and determination.
While living in Lake Charles, Maureen met the love of her life, Elmer “Woody” Woodfolk, a U.S. Air Force sergeant. Together they built a beautiful life grounded in faith, devotion, and family, sharing sixty-five wonderful years of marriage. During Elmer’s 21 years in the military, the family lived at Air Force bases throughout the United States and in Guam. Their journey together took them from Kansas and Maine to Michigan before eventually settling in Friendswood, Texas. Maureen and Elmer treasured traveling and creating lasting memories with their children, including summers spent visiting relatives in Maryland, Michigan and Texas.
Maureen devoted her life to education and the care of children. She taught at schools located on several Air Force bases before earning her B.S. Degree in Elementary Education from Texas Southern University after the family settled in Texas. She later taught in Houston ISD and dedicated more than twenty years to Hitchcock ISD, where she taught third through fifth grade students. Third grade always held a special place in her heart. Maureen was a nurturing educator whose patience, kindness, and genuine love for children touched the lives of countless students and families throughout her career.
After retirement, Maureen and Elmer made their home in Texas, where family remained at the center of her life. She found immense joy in hosting holidays, birthdays, and family gatherings filled with laughter, warmth, and love. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were among her greatest blessings and brought her endless pride and happiness.
Maureen will be lovingly remembered by her children, Tyrone Woodfolk and Angelia Woodfolk-Sprowl; her sisters, Sally Laws and Rose Johnson; her grandchildren, Marilda Maureen, Alexander Roosevelt, Monique Elise, Desmond Lyons, Ronnie Lee, Michael Maurice, and Krystal Moncayo; as well as many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, great-great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish her gentle spirit, wisdom, and loving guidance.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elmer Woodfolk; her sons, Alfred Woodfolk and Rodney Woodfolk; her parents, Jessie Green and Pauline Davis Green; her sisters, Sarah Green Robinson, and Jessie Mitchell; and her brothers, Earnest and Joseph Green.
Maureen will be remembered as a loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother, gifted educator, and faithful friend whose kindness and grace touched all who knew her. Her children and grandchildren remember her as a gentle, patient, and encouraging presence who always inspired them to pursue their goals and dreams. Teaching was not simply her profession — it was her calling. She loved children deeply and poured her heart into every classroom she entered. In retirement, Elmer often joined her at school, volunteering as a mentor to students. Together, they exemplified a lifelong commitment to education, service, and community.
