Maxine Kalinowski Mathis (known to all as Mac) was born on January 9, 1943 and went to see Jesus on June 9, 2026. She was born in League City to Alex and Mary Kalinowski – the youngest of 3 children. She was a lifelong League City resident. She attended Clear Creek High School where she played volleyball and was active in other clubs. She went to work for NACD (National Association of Conservation Districts) in 1961 after high school following her older sister Alice who worked there. She was the office manager and was the longest tenured employee of the company – retiring in 2009 with 48 years of service to them. She literally closed down the company and then retired. She met the love of her life – Gerald Mathis – while they both worked for NACD. Gerald began working there in 1962 and was the supervisor in the printing department. While dating they enjoyed polka dancing which was a big part of her heritage. They married on November 19, 1971 with just short of 55 years together. Their marriage was what scripture talked about. Genesis 2:18 says “I will make him (man) a helper fit for him”. They were definitely an exact fit – great compliment to each other. The end of Genesis 2:24 says “they shall become one flesh” and this was their relationship summed up. They spent their entire professional career working together at the same place and they did everything else together. You almost never saw one without the other – truly “one flesh”. They enjoyed cajun music and monthly trips to trade days in Liberty, Cold Springs and Livingston. They also enjoyed just a good drive around the city. Mac loved gardening and had quite a green thumb. She had beautiful vegetable gardens and lush potted plants. She was a massive animal lover – cats, dogs, birds and a special cow named Frosty. She just loved all animals and especially enjoyed the ducks that made their nightly stop in their backyard for dinner. If you knew one thing about Mac, you knew that she loved her chicken tchotchkes. Her house was adorned with all varieties of chicken tchotchkes. She was fiercely protective of those she loved and was always there to give her love and support. She was a natural nurturer even as a young child. Scripture says “Let love and kindness be the motivation behind all that you do”1 Corinthians 16:14. She was the epitome of this. She did not hesitate to help strangers when it was needed. She was a woman of faith and knew Jesus as Savior. Her actions of love were a reflection of her faith.
Her unexpected death will leave a void for those who knew and loved her – her husband Gerald Mathis, her brother Sonny Kalinowski and family, her sister Alice Westmoreland and family, her brother-in-law Keith Mathis and family and her brother-in-law Terry Mathis and family and many other friends and family. Proverbs 3:27 says “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due when it is in your power to do it.” Aunt Mac lived her life by this and even in death she donated lifesaving organs so others could have a second chance at life. This is the legacy she leaves for all of us to make the world a better place.
