Michael Melvin Knight, beloved husband, father, Papa, friend, and a man known for his kindness, humor, and generous spirit, passed away on August 13, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of memories cherished by all who knew and loved him.
Born April 21, 1949, in Houston, Texas, at Hermann Hospital to Melvin Mentor Knight and Maxine Ratcliffe Knight, he attended Mount Carmel Catholic School and played football in high school, where he was affectionately known as “Duke.”
Michael proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Navy for six years as an Interior Communications Electrician Second Class, IC2 (SS) aboard the ballistic missile submarine USS Lewis and Clark (SSBN-644). A highly trained nuclear electrician, he worked in the engine room supporting the submarine’s nuclear propulsion, electrical systems, and oxygen generation equipment. He earned his Silver Submarine Warfare Insignia, known as “Dolphins,” and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for his honorable service.
While stationed in Charleston, South Carolina, Michael met the love of his life, Stewart Halpin Knight. Their meeting began a lifelong partnership filled with love, devotion, family, and shared experiences.
After his military service, he began a long career with Shell Oil Company as a pipe fitter and operator. He later retired to focus on family, friendships, learning, and service to others.
Family was his greatest joy. He took immense pride in being a Papa, and his grandchildren were especially dear to him. He loved spending time with them—sharing stories, telling jokes, teasing, and making them laugh.
His volunteer work led him to Big Wish Farms in Alvin, where he spent nearly a decade becoming part of a close-knit community. Originally drawn there through Stewart’s love of horses, he soon developed his own deep appreciation for the people and mission of the farm.
He volunteered in the equine therapy program as a side walker for students with special needs, offering encouragement and support as they worked with the horses. What began as a way to support his wife’s passion became a meaningful and fulfilling part of his own life.
Over time, the farm’s owners and volunteers became like family. He valued the welcoming, family-oriented environment and the friendships he built there. His time at Big Wish Farms became one of the most meaningful chapters of his life.
An avid reader, he enjoyed spending hours with books, always curious and eager to learn. He loved discovering new ideas and sharing what he learned with others.
He will be remembered for his fun-loving spirit, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed telling jokes, sharing stories, and teasing those he loved, always bringing laughter and ease to those around him. His personality and warmth will live on in the memories of all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Mentor Knight and Maxine Ratcliffe Knight, and his sons, James Walker Knight and Michael Mathew Knight.
He is survived by his loving wife, Stewart Halpin Knight; his daughter, Debra Gail Butler, and her fiancé, Christopher John Lauer; and his cherished grandchildren, Cameron Butler, Kelsie Lutz and her husband Jay Lutz, Kyla Knight, and Coleton Knight. He is also survived by his sister, Judy Knight Marek; lifelong friends Larry and Gail Stout; and many extended family members and dear friends who were an important part of his life.
Michael leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, service, and generosity. He leaves stories that will continue to be told, lessons that will endure, and memories that will be treasured by those who loved him.
He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud Papa, honored veteran, and loyal friend who brought joy to those around him.
His life was defined not only by the years he lived, but by the lives he touched. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
