Each of us has our own “piece” of Butch, our own special place in his life. I hope as you heal and move forward that you share your memories. He had and made lots of them. For those of you that not know all about Butch, we, the family, wanted to share some of ours.
Known by most as Butch, he was born Morris Ben on August 06, 1948 in Monroe, Louisiana. He was a beautiful baby and at the age of 13 months was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. For a while he was the single apple of his momma’s eye. He was later joined by two siblings, Deborah and Doug.
He loved them both- loved being a big brother. His momma was laughing as she recanted a story from their youth. Apparently in his role as big brother he spent several moments, as The Peace Keeper, Referee, and Coach of his younger siblings. In a rare moment, after…caring…for them he looked at his momma and said “I am tired of being the big brother. They ought to do it!”
Butch loved his sister, Debbie, and was not opposed to sitting up with their Dad to inspect potential dates to make sure they measured up to expectation. Debbie told her momma once that it was a wonder she ever had one!!
When it came to Doug, also known as The Baby, Butch had a special love…a special bond. In the midst of his own life he still had time to coach his brothers Little League baseball team. At holidays, the two of them in the kitchen was a site to behold!! The laughter, love, and comradery amongst the “sampling” was endearing.
Butch loved to cook and even did some canning. His renowned pepper sauce will be missed by many.
He loved sports and was an avid fan of all of the Houston teams. He especially loved football and even played it in his younger years. Boy Scouts was also part of his life. His momma said he loved animals and could never turn his back on a hungry one. So it comes as no surprise that he owned 4 cats and a beautiful golden retriever, Madison. Along with all of the above he was gifted with a great sense of humor. This popped out while watching the much loved football, baseball, and basketball teams!
Out of all the things he loved, though, his momma was the most. Butch was a great son. He called her every day – once in the morning and again in the evening to check on her and her day. They even read the funny papers and laughed together regularly. There were many days when we would pop in for some of her great cooking during lunch. The love they shared was special – the love of a momma and her first born and his passing will leave a huge void in her.
Butch was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Pasadena. He graduated from South Houston High School and went on to complete his bachelors at Louisiana Tech University and his Masters of Business Administration at University of Houston Clear Lake before going on to become a Certified Financial Planner.
Butch is survived by his mother, Norma Rae Dickey, sister Deborah Lynn Dickey, brother Douglas Allen Dickey and nephew Jeremey Michael Dickey. He is also survived by sister-in-law Lou Ann Bird, several nieces and nephews and his dear and treasured neighbor and friend Bernard Robinson.
Butch is proceeded in death by his father – Luther H. Dickey and his wife- Patricia Holloway Dickey.
One of the many things we can say about him is that he had a huge heart. He loved life, his friends, and his family…so much that his big heart couldn’t give any more and just failed him. He passed from this life into eternity on January 25, 2018.
He will be missed but lives on in our hearts and memories.
