Paula Mejia Herrera, age 94 of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully in her sleep and entered Heaven’s gates on Tuesday, December 11, 2018. Born on January 15, 1924, she is predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years Jose Raul Herrera, Jr., parents Susanna Mejia Reyes and Teofilo Mejia and great grandson Lane Geary. Paula is survived by her 4 children, daughter Martha Marie Szescila and her husband Andy Szescila, daughter Evelyn Jeanneatte Geary and her husband Bob Geary, son Jose Raul Herrera, III and his wife Joan Marsanico, and daughter Ann Susan Hightower. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Bobby Geary, Brad Geary, Ginny Hightower, KC Geary Lawler and Jake Hightower and her 10 great grandchildren.
Paula met her beloved husband as a student nurse and he a medical student in San Salvador, El Salvador. The couple immigrated in 1952 to begin their life in the United States. Paula was employed as a registered nurse at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, Texas, and Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston Texas. She raised her children in Pasadena where she was intimately involved in her children’s activities and maintained an active social life with relatives and friends. A loving mother and homemaker, Paula was a remarkable cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends, especially over the holidays. Paula and her husband traveled extensively around the world, and together relished learning about different cultures. Having many hobbies and interests, both Paula and Raul were accomplished dancers and spent many hours on the dance floor. She was also a dedicated sports fan and loved attending and watching sporting events of all kinds especially those of her grandchildren. Lastly, Paula was a deeply religious person and devout Catholic.
Paula was lovingly cared for in the last 10 years of her life by her caretakers Doris, Reyna, Elizabeth and Lorena. The family gives their greatest and warmest gratitude to everyone who cared and loved Paula, notably Dr. Anita Major.
Funeral services celebrating her life will include a Rosary Service held on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 5:00 PM with a visitation from 5:30-8:00PM Saturday, December 15 and a Celebratory Service on Sunday, December 16, 2018, at 12:30 PM, both at Forest Park East located at 21620 Gulf Freeway Webster, TX, 77598.
