It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Teles S. Melendez, fondly known as James, on September 26, 2026. Born on December 12, 1931, in Houston, Texas, James was a beacon of kindness, generosity, and warmth throughout his 94 years.
James was the beloved son of the late Teles and Fannie Bailey Melendez, whose values and love shaped him into the remarkable man he became. He was predeceased by his dear parents, but their legacy of love and integrity continued through him.
A man of education and commitment, James began his academic journey at St. Joseph’s High School, later attending St. Mary’s University, the University of Houston, and Massey Business College. His quest for knowledge was matched by his dedication to service, as he proudly served in the Army for two years as a Spanish interpreter to a Colombian battalion, a role that highlighted his linguistic talents and commitment to fostering understanding across cultures.
James' professional life was marked by his long and meaningful career with the Texas Department of Transportation, from which he eventually retired. His work was characterized by diligence and a steadfast commitment to excellence, traits that earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and community members alike.
Beyond his professional achievements, James was a devoted member of the Mary Queen Catholic Church, where he found community and spiritual fulfillment. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding his actions and nurturing his compassionate spirit.
James' personal life was a rich tapestry of love and joy, woven together with his beloved wife of 66 years, Elia. Together, they built a life filled with warmth and laughter, raising two wonderful children, Jim (Jhoy) and Margo, who were the pride and joy of their lives, and granddaughters Christy (Santi) and Ashley, and great grandson, Malcolm.
A true gentleman in every sense, James treated everyone with respect, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness was as boundless as his love for music, reading, and the adventures of travel, particularly through the many cruises he enjoyed with family and friends.
In honoring James' memory, the family kindly suggests donations be made in his name to support causes dear to his heart.
