Vonda was born on January 12, 1933 in Gary, Texas. Her early years were spent in Haslam, Texas as an only child and then later she and her parents moved to Houston during the early days of World War II as her parents became involved in the war effort.
Vonda married the love of her life, James Robert Matteson on September 24, 1950 in Houston. They had met on a blind date. It was actually a double date and they were not each other's date! They were blessed with two sons, Mark and Paul. Vonda loved her family dearly and devoted her life to raising her boys. She would say those were the happiest days of her life.
Vonda was stately, soft-spoken, and always fashion-conscious and impeccable about her appearance and driven to expand her world and knowledge. After being a happy, stay-at-home mom/wife for almost 15 years, she went to work at NASA and then later at Stubbs Overbeck Engineering. Her last job was working for the City Manager in Texas City.
Vonda was predeceased by her husband, Jim, but survived by her sons, Mark (Jean) Matteson of West Chester, PA, and Paul (Nacy) Matteson of Bellaire, Texas. Vonda is also survived by her three granddaughters Melissa Jenkins, Abbey (Corwin) Ames, and Emily (Cody) Thomas as well as her great grandchildren Caroline Jenkins, Reagan & Beau Ames, and Greyson Thomas. Vonda is also blessed to be survived by her step-grandson, James (Lindsay) Dalessio and their children, Aria and Stella, as well as her half-brothers, Mike (Theresa) Freeman and Randy (Cara) Freeman.
Vonda's family wishes to send a special thank you to the entire staff at Brazos Towers at Bayou Manor where she has lived for 12 years.
