Charles Winkelstein, a lifelong resident of New York City, passed away peacefully with family in Wellfleet, MA. He was 98 years old.
Known for his outgoing nature and welcoming spirit, Charles’s wide circle of friends knew him as a true bon vivant. He loved traveling the world, sailing, drinking concoctions on the beach, and enjoying opera, musicals and concerts. Cape Cod, especially the ponds of Wellfleet, held a special place in his heart.
Charles was predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Marilyn Winkelstein. He is survived by his children, Peter and Kendra (nee Daly) Winkelstein, and Nancy (nee Winkelstein) and Christopher Plaut; his grandchildren, Devlin and Maya (nee Soble) Winkelstein, Camden Winkelstein and Christina Lee, Nathan Winkelstein and Lindsey Jacks, Susan Winkelstein, Caitlin Plaut and Philip Matthaeus, and Matthew and Alex (nee Voorhees) Plaut; and his great-grandchildren, Corin, Liam, and Elizabeth Winkelstein, Emma and Erik Winkelstein, Lucas and TJ Winkelstein, and Oliver Matthaeus.
Charles was among the foremost psychoanalysts in New York City. He completed his undergraduate studies at Cornell University in 1947 and earned his M.D. from N.Y.U. College of Medicine in 1951. A Board-certified psychiatrist, he earned his Certificate in Psychoanalytic Medicine in 1962 from the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. He held various esteemed teaching positions at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York Hospital, and Weill-Cornell University Medical College. He was a respected member of several medical societies, including the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychoanalytic Association. His dedication to his patients was an inspiration to colleagues and students.
Charles Winkelstein will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Memories of his kindness, humor, and good spirits will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held in the Fall. Donations may be made to Friends of Wellfleet Ponds or Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, or to the charity of your choice.
