Ellsworth E. Koonz

EASTHAM – The Reverend Ellsworth E. Koonz, retired Episcopal Priest, 87, of Eastham, died on Friday, February 8, 2013.

Born on August 31, 1925 in Greenfield, MA, he was the son of the late Earl R. and Estella Roanna (Pedigree) Koonz.

He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in 1946 he graduated from the University of Michigan, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Engineering. He later earned his Masters in Divinity in 1949 from the General Theological Seminary.

Reverend Koonz began his life of service to the church in 1949. He served the St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Ann Arbor, MI from 1949-52, Calvary Church in Saginaw, MI from 1952-54, Church of the Transfiguration in Manhattan from 1954-55, National Episcopal Church from 1955-60 in Vocations and College Ministry, Good Shepherd Church in West Lafayette, IN from 1960-70, Church of the Holy Spirit in Orleans, MA from 1972-85, The Church of St. Mary of the Harbor in Provincetown from 1989-96, the Aids Ministry of Cape Cod in South Wellfleet from 1986-94 and was the Co Owner of Drummer Cove Cottages in South Wellfleet from 1980-94.

In 1990, he received the Recognition Award for AIDS Ministry from the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts.

He is survived by his brother, Bernard R. Koonz of Chatham and his lifelong friend, The Reverend John H. Eastwood and his family, Judy, Adam and Jessica of San Francisco, CA.

Vigil will be held from 5-7 pm on Friday, February 15, 2013 at the Church of St. Mary of the Harbor, 517 Commercial Street in Provincetown.

The funeral service will be conducted at 4 pm on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the Church.
