George Ralph Bertrand
September 20, 1946 – June 19, 2020
Our loving father, grandfather and friend, George Ralph Bertrand, peacefully slipped away from us on his couch on June 19, 2020, he was 73 years young.
George was born in Cherry Hill, New Jersey and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1975 he moved with his young family to Truro and spent the rest of his life on the Outer Cape. Most recently he lived close to his family in Wellfleet.
George was a painting contractor on the Cape for many years. He was an accomplished athlete playing hockey and golf, and was a beautiful, skillful skier.
He loved the Outer Cape and recently rediscovered his love of fishing and the natural beauty of the area.
The center of George’s universe was his family. He loved his daughters, Shannon and Carli dearly, and cherished the arrival of his only grandson, Liam. Every Sunday, Liam anxiously awaited the arrival of “Grandpa Doughnut”, the highlight also of George’s week. Last week Grandpa and Liam spent time working in Shannon’s garden; one of their favorite places to be together.
George was charming and disarming and easily made friends everywhere he went. He maintained his lifelong and loyal friendships, from his youth in Springfield with Richie Gallivan, Phil Fyhr, Mike O’Malley and Rosanna Bertrand who never wavered in their love and support. He made many lasting friends on the Cape. From P-Town in the early years, to Orleans on Hopkins Lane, and finally to his own place on Sand Lane in Wellfleet. George was loved by all who knew him.
He greeted people at Cumbies and valued his fellow Cape Codders. The mail clerk in Eastham contacted Shannon as soon as he found out to tell her that George was the one person he most enjoyed seeing, he was always joyful, greeted him by name, and spent time to shoot the breeze.
That was George. Rest in Peace dad, grandpa & friend, we will love you forever.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, June 28th at Mayo Beach in Wellfleet.
In lieu of flowers please donate in George’s name to prevent homelessness on CapeCod - https://www.hpcapecod.org.
